Fifth Son
Description:
This innovative project was designed to utilize traditional gaming media as well as email, telephone, instant messaging, and real world interaction. In a fully automated process, player decisions affect the interactions that they recieve, thus making it a replayable experience. To encourage replayability and collaboration, some of the finer plot points and a couple exciting puzzles are revealed only through multiple game play experiences.
In Detail:
I was approached way back in 2002 to provide a viral marketing hook to a relatively typical point and click adventure game. My initial responsibility was to explore the game as it was designed and provide thoughts on how to create a few interactive websites. As I worked through the game, I discovered several points where direct contact from a character would be welcomed (such as an email or phone call). Before long, I was responsible for transforming the simple adventure game into a pervasive gaming experience.
Although the game has been shelved in favor of other projects and the likelihood of the game being completed & published seems to dwindle which each passing week month year, the successes and failures in this project have been an important part of my growth as a game designer. In fact, many decisions that I make today can be traced back to this very game. Therefore, I felt important to mention on the portfolio and would freely welcome any discussion on the aforementioned successes and failures as well as the decision to stop active development.
